Its kind of difficult to comment on the sound your car makes just from the posts, but this would be something worth checking; FIAT has been very good I think about this warranty issue. It was not at all common, but it may be worth mentioning to the shop.
Personally for a first car I'd pick the Panda or Toyota Aygo over the 500 if I was going for a Fiat but the 500 is a perfectly good choice. Everyone else seems to be saying no, but if you can afford it it is a nice little car that's decent to drive, inexpensive to maintain and despite the reliability issues (it is a Fiat after all) not too costly to get fixed when it does go wrong.
