Resident Evil 7 in the other hand tried to take elements from famous horror films like Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre that it felt it was going through identity crisis. While I was never fan of RE6 story, it at least tried to develop some of its characters and have some meaning but the execution could have been better. 8 had slightly better variety and a really cool setting but wasn't very creepy (except THAT part). I got more enjoyment out of 8 because I like castles and European folklore and was a big fan of the RE4 callbacks like the merchant and inventory system but I think 7 was the closest they ever came to the originals after RE4 until RE2R came out.
Resident Evil 6 doubled-down on RE5's action-focused double-down and ultimately ending up disappointing many long-time fans, leading to the much-needed refresh that came with Resident Evil 7.

HELP. RE2 for sure. It’s not even close if you are new to the series. My opinion, don't buy 3. It is Jill's campaign, it is super short and not worth it. Resident Evil 2 is pretty nice, harder than Village and more old fashioned, as it is a remake of an older game. Story wise, you can expect less than from re8 since it is more of an action
